Video Calls Before Meeting: Why We Recommend Them

We suggest a video call before a first meeting, and we would suggest it even if this site had no video calling at all. Here is why.

Photos are curated. Messages are composed. A video call is neither. Within five minutes you know whether the face matches, whether the person listens or just waits to talk, whether the easy rhythm of the chat survives the presence of another human being. Sometimes it does. Sometimes it does not, and you have learned that at no cost, in your own home, with a cup of tea.

It is also a safety measure, and a strong one. Nearly every serious fraud on any dating platform involves a person who would not, or could not, appear on camera. An honest person might be shy of video; a dishonest one will find reasons, endlessly. If you have asked twice and been deflected twice, treat that as your answer.

Some people worry that a video call is too intimate too early. It is not, if you keep it short and treat it as a hello rather than a date. Twenty minutes. A time you both agreed. Sitting somewhere ordinary. You can end it with "this was nice, shall we do coffee?" or with "thank you, I do not think we are a match," and both are easier to say on a screen than across a table.

Practical things. Have light on your face rather than behind you. Prop the phone rather than holding it. Wear what you would wear to meet a friend. Do not scroll anything else. If the connection is poor, switch to voice rather than struggling; a voice call still tells you most of what you need.

A call is not a commitment. It is a courtesy to both of you: a way to make sure the meeting you are about to have is with the person you think it is.
