When to Take a Break from Dating Apps

We run a dating site, so it may seem strange for us to say this: sometimes the best thing you can do for your dating life is to stop for a while.
Here is how to know. You open the app out of habit rather than interest. Every new profile looks like the last one. You feel a small drop of disappointment before you have read a word. You have three conversations going and cannot remember which one likes hiking. You catch yourself being short with people who have done nothing wrong. A date that goes fine leaves you flat.
That is not a sign that there is nobody out there. It is a sign that you have been doing this on empty. Dating well takes curiosity, and curiosity is a resource that runs down and has to be refilled.
So take a break, and take it properly. Not "I will just check once a day." Log out. Give it a fixed period, four weeks, six, whatever feels like enough to miss it. Tell the people you are talking to, if any of them matter, and tell them the truth: "I am stepping back from the app for a bit. I have enjoyed our conversation; I will be in touch when I am back." Most people respect it. Some will still be there.
Then fill the time with things that are not about finding someone. See friends you have been neglecting. Take up the thing you always meant to. Go to the family event. Sleep. The purpose is not self-improvement; it is to remember that your life is already full, so that when you return, a person is an addition to it rather than a rescue from it.
You will know you are ready to come back when you find yourself curious again, when a stranger's profile makes you wonder rather than sigh.
When you do return, consider coming back smaller. Fewer conversations, more attention to each. A call sooner. A coffee sooner. The break was not about finding a better strategy; it was about finding yourself again, and bringing that person to the table.
Your account will be here. So will we.
